You Can’t Just Lay on a Beach All Day, Every Day….
To which I say: Challenge Accepted!
Ok, so no, laying on a beach every day all day for 180 days would not work for many people, self included. But we were asked often, what we planned on doing for 6 months in Mexico?
My answer was always the same, “Be”. We are going to Be in Mexico. We did not have an agenda, we did not have a master plan or even travel schedule. We were simply going to Mexico for the full amount of time our Tourist Visa would allow and we were going to Be.
This was our first winter on the Mayan Riviera, and we stuck to our word. We did spend copious amounts of time laying on the beach, walking the beach and bobbing in the water, but we “hunted for food” ( as I called it) than we did pretty much anything else.
The beaches are spectacular on the Mayan Riviera, so hanging out there is really a highlight and we did not take it for granted.
The sand is like butter, the waters the most amazing turquoise, clear and warm. We often packed drinks and a snack in Sam’s Fossil side satchel along with a couple sarongs to lay on, dry off with and dust the sand off our feet. ** A cool hack I learned from Pinterest. Sarongs for beach days are so much more versatile than a towel or blanket. Lighter weight, can be worn, dry quicker and sand doesn’t stick.**
However, ultimately, like I said, our intention and whole purpose in going to Mexico was plain and simple, to Be…In Mexico.
We had wanted to live in another country, escape the winter and live carefree, open to whatever came our way, but not searching for anything outside of experiencing our time in Mexico together.
And we succeeded. We took in every day as it came. Made short term plans for excursions and one long term one to jet set to the opposite side of the country to visit friends for a month.
Eat, drink, and be, be, be, be….
We learned a lot during those first 180 days. It was not always easy. It challenged us in ways we didn’t anticipate and some we had predicted.
What our first long term in Mexico did for us, reinforced in us that what we had considered a normal life in Canada, was not the way we wanted to live long term. We saw and experienced life in a slower, less material way and we liked it. No, we loved it.
And it convinced us this is how we will continue to prioritize our lives.
Less Striving More Being.
When you strip away mortgages, car payments, the latest and greatest toys and well…stuff, stress melts away, and you have zero desire to reintroduce it into your life.
So, although we didn’t “Lay on the beach all day, every day” We did succeed in our goal to Be and that was the experience we were looking for.
And continues to be. Every day.
